Radio Frequency??

I'm doing a science project where I put a radio near a computer. So can some one explain why the static gets louder the closer you get. I'm in 8th grade so put it so I can understand it! hehe. Thank you!

Can you put some scientific reason why it happens??

static

your radio is getting interference from the computer

The speakers are picking up the RF (radio frequency)generated noise from the computer.

I don't know, but that happens to me whenever I have it next to anything really electical!

the closer you put the radio to thecomputer the stronger the noise and re from the computer

Im in 8th grade 2! We kinda learned about that, but not really. Something to do with the waves from the computer and interfearing with the waves from the radio. It might have something to do with transverse waves. But im not sure. I would ask if transverse waves have anything to do with the interference. Ask ur teacher. We just got done learnig a little about transverse waves and radio waves are transverse, so it probably has something to do with that. Maybe thats what ur teacher is trying to get across to you. But Im not 100% sure.
I hope that helped.

You've got several things working on this situation: You; the computer power supply and other components, the wireless stuff that may surround you, the speakers and the monitors (and probably a couple more things I forgot about) - but you get the picture.

Depending on the quality of the radio and its antenna, the interference caused by all the things in your environment gradually build up and turn your radio static-y.

The cumputer and its components are the biggest offenders, so the static is more noticeable the closer you get to it.

My Grandson's in eighth grade and he OK'd this ;<)

You're getting interferance. It's like if you can pick a station a station up on a nearby frequency and you can hear that station trying to come in (let's say your on 106.5 and a station tries to come in on 106.3), interference, or some call bleed over. I'm an amateur (ham) radio operator and was a c-b'er. I experience that all the time from time to time..

radios are tuned to pick up specific frequencies. Your computer is digital, so it's not supposed to produce radio waves, but it is constantly switching (that's what digital circuits do), and whenever the switching speed is close to the frequency that your radio is tuned to, you will pick up something.
Early computers were slow by today's standards, but now, most computers have clock speeds that are more than 1GHz. This is a higher frequency than your FM radio, and the other digital circuits in the computer will probablly be switching all over the broadcast bands.
Also, your computer's power supply is a 'switching' power supply, which may also produce interference that your radio can pick up.
Computers, and most other electronic devices, have to be tested and certified that they will not produce too much interference before they can be sold, but it is almost impossible to make the interference completely gone.

There are complicated math procedures for studying how digital signals show up as radio waves, but this would be more than you need for the 8th grade.
