Is it true about radio?

that a number a years ago you needed a licence to own a radio?

That's a UK - US thing. It might help if we identified what country we are from. In the US, the stations pick up the cost so no one has to pay a tax on their radios and TVs. In the UK they collect the tax from the individuals. I see some of the answers here are indicating that radio is no longer included, but TV is. So, I guess that's your answer. In the UK, yes you had to pay on your radio (at least at one tme). In the US (where I'm from) this has never been the case.

Any Brits who want to correct me if I got it wrong are welcome to set the record straight.

I kinda like your funny old place. 1st in 69; had a right-from-'Nam haircut and ruck-sack. Hung out at Picadilly-made friends with all the longhairs. A bit of Americana for them. Bunked down in a hippy crash pad and haven't been the same since. Tap a pint for me, woudja darlin'. Report It

You didn't need a licence to own it.

You did need a licence to use it.

yeah - radio was the old TV

You did then

no way. where in the world did you hear that?

yes it is

Yes, a long time ago

yes , until sometime in the latish 60's you would need to buy a radio licence for however many radios you had at home, unless you already had a tv licence that covered radio listening as well.
believe it or not you also needed a separate radio licence for your car radio too.

Yes this is true xxx

You would need to have a citizen band license for a powerful
C.B. .That had the capability to step on or walk over emergency broadcast signals.Even better yet I believe those(c.b.'s) were illegal.A lot of truck drivers that run from state to state can validate the point I am trying to make.

Not in the USA. Radio receivers have always been free, and unlicenced to both own and operate here.

Of course, to operate almost any kind of a radio transmitter (commercial broadcast, Amateur, CB etc), would require a licence.

I don't think so! I can't be sure though! I wasn't born then. lol
