How do you get your own show on MTV?

I mean, Lauren Conrad was just a regular person before Laguna Beach & The Hills, so how was she discovered? Did some MTV producers randomly come to her and ask her and her friends to star on a reality TV show? How does this all work? Also, are these shows staged & scripted? I think so. (Even though I enjoy these shows, I was just wondering...)

ALL reality shows are scripted. Watch the credits at the end of the shows. There are always writers and directors credited.

Watch the "tv/film/video" listings on craigslist.org

MTV and other networks regularly post needs for casting calls on there. At this point, getting on a reality show is almost as easy as falling off a log. Of course, it's MUCH easier if you live in the New York City area or in Los Angeles.

Also, check on MTV's website. They list shows that they are looking for people to be in.
