Is the young generation basically insulting Rock Music? |
I am strictly against drugs. But I know the many of my idol rockstars were dead due to drug abuse or overdose (Morrison, Cobain, Hendrix, Brian Jones, Janis Jopplin. Frank Zappa not only disliked drug use, but on more than one occasion he was known to kick out his fellow band members if he discovered that they were taking drugs. They're hardly integral to the process, and there is as much or more bad drug-inspired music as good. You've got it backwards. Drugs help the production of rock music, not hinder it. It's rock... the youngsters are supposed to be loud and snotty. In 1956, Elvis pops his mother's sleeping tablets and invents Rock 'n' Roll. I do not see drugs as a necessary part in the creation of music. Sure, they may help some people create new and innovative music, but it is far from necessary. In fact, many modern rock artists became more famous AFTER they got sober, such as Say Anything and My Chemical Romance. "The ever popular tortured artist effect." (Todd Rundgren). All the people you listed were true artists, and the fact is, a lot of artists live w/ demons they can't handle. So, they abuse drugs and alcohol. Also, some of these artists can't handle the crowds and limelight that their music brings. Without drugs they really can't perform. Morrison sang w/ his back to the audience when he first started. Performing is a scary thing for a sensitive soul. They aren't insulting Rock, they're just being themselves -- for better or for worse. Smoke weed... that is all. I know really. These kids at my school like to dress like it's 1986, yet they listen to Korn/Linkin Park BS. actually there is a straight edge movement that is very popular in the industry right now. No drinking, no drugs and for some that means clean eating or refraining from unmarried sex. Ah, kids. It's a youth thing; nothing more. Every generation thinks that they have A Better Answer when all it amounts to is a different take on what's been done before. Those that live through the ordeal wind up wise enough to put it behind them. Think of it as culling the herd; survival of the fittest. Real rock has a life in the minds of the believers and will go on as a result. Sometimes drugs can make for better music. but not all the time. My Chemical Romance put on bad shows when they were wasted. Yes.The new generation are stupid and have no way to figure out that drugs don't solve anything it's the talent that gets you places even though you may not want it(Kurt Cobain for example) Its hard to say this but, without drugs...we wouldn't have A LOOOOOOT of good songs or artists. |
