Rock is a broad genre. Thats like asking whats the difference between lasagna and Italian food.

You have to be careful, punk is practically a religion to some people. I personally believe it started with the Ramones.

Johnny Ramone said he was interested in hearing what Rock n Roll (i.e. Chuck Berry) would have sound like without the blues influence, essentially. So It was played with downstrokes (mostly), without the blues "swagger" and in their live shows they played faster (be it adrenaline, or a conscious decision, I don't know.) and louder.
PUNK WAS BORN!!!

Since then it has taken on different shapes forms and homelands, be it the Sex Pistols and the Clash in England or Social Distortion (and lots more) in Cali, a few things have remained the same.
Loud & Fast rules the game, political lyrics (along with social consciosness to the point of activism, something the Ramones didn't initially have) are prevalent.

That is punk, as far as rock goes, that is a huge genre of music encompassing alot of different sub-genres. Perhaps you could elaborate on the type of rock you're talkin about.

There really isn't. Punk is a sub-genre of rock. All punk is rock, but not all rock is punk. One thing is certain. sOmE eMo B@nDs MiGhT s@v yOu.

UGH.
You should learn the difference in letters so you can use proper punctuation and capitalization instead of worrying about such things.

rockets you're right, punk and rock are a bit similar... maybe punk groups are more angry and rude... and they're usually against the government, and they're anarhists...my suggestion is to listen to punk music...it's the best.
bye bye from italy

Back in the old days when Punk Rock first emerged it happened as a kind of backlash to the fact that rock had evolved so far away from its roots. In the early days, rock and roll was very simple three chord short songs. As time passed rock became more and more sophisticated until for many young people it was no longer fun or exciting. Examples of this are Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, the Moody Blues etc. The music was so sophisticated, in fact that young teenagers could not play any of the songs.

Into this void came Punk Rock. Not so much a philosophy, not so much a lifestyle, that all came later. What it was, was rock stripped down to its basic elements. No horn sections, no violins just guitar, bass and drums. Fast, hard, loud and the kids could all play it pretty much within two weeks of buying their first electric guitar.

It then began to drift into some particularly dark and ugly areas that saw many an artist drug overdose, many a violent mosh pit and a lot of excess. Some young people bought into a very depressing side of it and well, some never recovered.

But bands like the Ramones are pretty much the best example of what it was originally all about. Catchy, simple, creative songs that stick in your head and get the party going as soon as you hear them. I think the Sex Pistols were probably the most responsible for turning it to the dark and dangerous side.

There is no difference between Punk Rock and Rock. Rock is Rock and it comes in many flavors. Punk Rock was a look back to its roots.
