What is it with the Beatles and Indian music??

Why do they have so many songs with a Sitar, or other indian instruments and beats in it if they were from england..?
while i'm at it, whats your favorite song by them??

the beatles were very influenced by indian cultures. it shows most in george harrison who fell in love with the sitar and the indian culture. He ended up being hare krishna for the latter part of his life.
his love of the music started being shown when during the album Rubber Soul, he took sitar lessons from Ravi Shankar (excuse my spelling please) and the rest of them loved the idea of love and meditation to take the place of the drugs that they were addicted to. LSD and meditation end up giving the same effect. have fun learning about the beatles!
cheers mate!

and strawberry fields forever is the end all, be all of music

no problem mate Report It

Hey Jude

they experimented with lots of instruments and musical styles

a sitar showed up on the set of their 2nd movie, so they used it for one of their songs on next album (Rubber Soul). George's interest in India and friendship with Ravi Shankar account for subsequent use of the sitar

I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me!

Norwegian Wood - Beatles

Their passing interest in all things Indian was fashionable in the 60`s.

it was popular at the time... Eastern religion and philosophy...

The beatles like to be different, i like Strawberry Fields Forever

Because later in life, their lead guitarist, George Harrison took a trip to India and became interested in Indian Culture and Music. My favorite song is Here Comes the Sun.

um hard to say those are some very strange soundin insturments and the beatles were some strange dudes. dont get me wrong i love there music but idk

and my favorite would have to be taxman

its because Lennon was with Yocco. my fav song by them would have to be "Hey Jude"

Because in the late 60's the Beatles were heavily into meditation, and visited India frequently; Ravi Shankar was a big influence in their music...the Beatles were very much ahead of their time w/ music experimentation......

one of them went to india.
and my favourite song is let it be.
its soooooo beautiful.

The Beatles were introduced to Indian music while filming Help!
George was very interested in learning how to play the sitar. A lot of the inclusion of Indian instruments in their songs came from a desire to sound different from anything else out at the time (and I think George probably wanted to show off his musical abilities!)
The Beatles did spend some time in India, but that trip didn't end well (the maharishi they were studying under ended up being corrupt).
I like most of their music. I'd say some of my favorites are A Day in the Life and Old Brown Shoe.

i love 'rain'. in the 60's people were very into being free and finding sprirituality, the beatles chose eastern religion in an ashram. this heavily influenced their music (especially george harrison's), their sitar player was named ravi shankar, he is nora jones's dad.

George Harrison just had a thing for Indian culture and music. You know, we all have those little odd fascinations.

Strawberry Fields Forever.

These are all excellent answers on how they incorporated indian sounds to their music. So i'll just go with my favorite tunes at the moment and that would be "I Me Mine," and "She's So Heavy."
