Why is Rush so under rated?

They're progressive rock, a lot of prog bands generally get overlooked because they're not radio friendly. But they do have a lot of respect from other musicians so I would say that's better than MTV fame.

because they are progressive and progressive isn't mainstream, it's something different and therefore not any good to your average Joe, despite having way more talent than any band they can name.

Trust me, I'm a big prog fan.

Rush was never a favorite of the "experts". But they put on a hell of a show, seen them several times.

because many people wont accept how amazing they are and that they are 10 times better than most other wannabee rush bands! Rush should rock on!

The idiot on the radio that is a pill popper that made fun of poor Michael J. Fox who has Parkinsons? That "Rush"? I think he needs to be flushed!

Because most people don't recognize the musical talent required to get that sound out of a 3 man band.

Several legit reasons here. They're really a musician's band. They require a bit too much patience for most. I mean, I'm the biggest Rush fan I know & even *I* didn't think much of them at 1st! lol

They're def' Not underrated by most rock musicians who've been at it for many years. In fact, they're highly regarded in guitar & drumming circles. I think most younger people have hardly heard of them.

i think it's just the timing. kids today don't know them. i remember in HS in 82, i went to school one morning and i swear i was the only one who didn't have a Rush t-shirt on. they played in The Meadowlands the night before.

I like Rush a lot especially since they are from my hometown. The one thing I can see that maybe was a turnoff was Geddy Lee's voice. I know a lot of people who like prog/classic rock and can't stand listening to him yet they love the instrumental music by Rush.

I wouldn't say Rush were under-rated. Given the lack of public exposure given to hard/prog rock, I think Rush are pretty well known, and here in the UK, I hear as much Rush on the radio as I do Led Zep or Pink Floyd (which ain't much, to be truthful!), since most radio stations are far more interested in playing Westlife or the Spice Girls, neither of whom can sing as high as Geddy!
Rush are one of my favourite rock bands and they're held in high regard by anyone who loves good heavy rock music.
Would we really want it any other way? I mean imagine going down your local shopping mall on a Saturday afternoon and hearing groups of 12-year old girls squealing "We are the priests of the temples....." at the top of their voices??

great instrumentals and vocals, great lyrics. BUT....
I have found that I have tired of their classic 'Permanent Waves' album; from overplaying it. With the all-time classics like Led Zeppelin 4, it can be difficult to overplay them. Maybe Rush is great at first, but doesn't have just staying power. But this is purely my 'subjective' experience. [excuse the feeble Ayn Rand pun!]

I disagree with the comments about the youth of today not liking them, i'm 16 and i love them as do most of my friends of the same age.

That may be because i heard of Geddy Lee being a fantastic bass player and wanting to improve my own playing decided to listen to them.

I do agree with Geddy Lee's vocals, a tad annoying.

I prefer YYZ over any of their other songs.

I bought a DAB radio for work and there are 2 stations where you can hear Rush, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc. - Planet Rock and The Arrow. I have these stations on all day, they're great. If you can have a radio on at work, it's worth investing in a digital one as there are stations like this that play older records that don't get played much on FM stations. You get stations dedicated to certain types of music which you don't really get on FM.
