Is this music appropriate for an 10 year old?

My step-sister really likes the music I listen to, but I'm not really sure if it's okay for her to be listening to, or if it'd somehow affect her or something lol idk.

First of all, I'm happy to hear that she doesn't like Hannah Montana :)

I will say that it's actually difficult to find music that is suitable for all ages. Just look at the way Kidz Bop and others ravage through songs you wouldn't even think twice about.

She probably has no idea what Rage Against the Machine is talking about - because their lyrics are quite political. While Nirvana tends to go into some deep and troubling stuff, there were certainly many girls your stepsister's age listening to them when Nirvana first came out. But it's good to be the one there when she starts to question stuff like that.

Then again you can find raunchiness in mainstream stuff too. Justin Timberlake is not necessarily as good for girls as you would be led to believe by his fans.

Theres nothing wrong with a 10 year old listening to alot of different music out there in the world today....I wouldn't recommend anything to explicit though....and I do believe that most music has a rating lable signifying if it is to obscene for a younger audience.....Good Luck Buddy....you know your sister better than any of us....and you should be able to make a good sound judgement on what to get the little tike.....also if you think it is bad...then it probably is....

you 10 year old step sister has an amazing taste in music, she likes the same bands as me, and im 15.
it probally wont effect her, i listened to mature music when i was he age, and i barely listened to the lyrics, and i dont think it affected me

Some of this music is okay and some of it should wait until she is a little older and more mature.

you might want to let her turn 12 before she gets a hold of the used... but thats me being hypocritical...

Is any music really "appropriate" for an age group?

My father exposed me to groups like Emerson, Lake and Palmer, the Stones, The Who, Cream, Creedence Clearwater, etc., at the age of five. I was drooling over ELP's "Brain Salad Surgery" cover artwork and it's pretty dark stuff.

May not be as bad as today's art, but, I was five in the 1980's! (I turned out just fine).

My mother exposed me to Motown. Both of my parents exposed me to classical music.

I'm so glad that they did. I love a large variety of music. I got into techno, dance, trance, and rave in high school. I never lost sight of my roots. I'm going to do the same thing with my children.

If anyone says that these groups talk about sex, drugs and rock and roll, or swear, calmly explain that most songs from the 60's on were about that as well... maybe not so much with swearing, but times have changed.

I grew up in the 80's with exposure to 80's music, the 90's as well (and I was still a young girl then). Children and teenagers are going to learn about certain subjects no matter what age they are. It's your job to explain to them what is appropriate and what's not.

Personally, I don't think 10 year olds should be subjected to that kind of music. I listened to the song and I don't think 10 year olds should be listening to songs with that type of language and with that type of adult content in it. If she doesn't like Hannah Monanna, then perhaps find out what other artists she is interested in that has songs that are more appropriate for kids her age to listen to.

dont worry. i have a younger brother aged 7. he listens to slayer, slipknot, mudvayne, mcr, aiden, basicly anythink and everythink from my cd collection

... i listened to slipknot and linkin park when i was 8 so i would think its fine. some people wouldnt agree.

Hey I grew up on music that talked all about sex and drugs (I was a classic rock nut) The first song I remember listening to on the radio is Alice Coopers Poison (I was four) yet I've turned out great. I have straight A's take all AP courses and I'm perfectly fine. I'm just a bit different and never stopped loving rock. She will be fine I've listened to rock before I can remember.

Growing up, my dad listened to everything he wanted to and watched whatever he wanted to. At the tender age of three I already had half the Pink Floyd and The Doors songs memorized and was used to watching extremely graphic movies like Hellraiser, Phantasim and the Friday The 13th series. Today there is no such thing as a scary movie to me because of it.

In the end, it is up to the parents to make sure their children grow up right. I believe kids can watch adult movies if the parents make sure the kids know its only a movie and its fake (ie Freddy is not real and hes not going to jump out of your closet), as well as real life consequences for the character's actions

As far as music goes, your children will hear worse at elementry school then on their favorite bands records.

It's completely fine that she is listening to those bands and artists.
The majority of them are very good and you have nothing to worry about.
When I was 10 I was listening to music that you'd expect someone twice my age to listen to.
It helped me broaden my taste in music.

Just don't let her listen to people like Avril Lavigne and Lindsay Lohan...They really really suck, and are very annoying.
I'm greatly surprised to see that a 10 year old doesn't like Hannah Montana...That's AWESOME though!
Because I can't stand her, and that "lollie-pop" type of music...

But the music you listed is a lot of mature music for a 10 year old to be listening to. Nothing is wrong with your taste in music, but it just doesn't seem like it's in the younger kid range.
But I'd have to say out of all of them, that Blink-182, Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy would be a little more appropriate for a 10 year old to listen to.
Maybe try some similar bands like Simple Plan, Taking Back Sunday, Paramore, Flyleaf, AFI, 30 Seconds to Mars...Bands like that are similar to them. They're pretty good too, and aren't very explicit (if that's maybe what you're worried about).
