Musical Integrity?

In your opinion what is musical integrity? Who has it? Who Doesn't? Who had it, but lost it? Who didn't have it but gained it?

i think musical integrity is when a band makes music for the love of it. making music that means something to them, not trying to write songs to make money. if their songs are successful, that's great, but not life or death. i think The Band was probably the best at this. they really didn't fit into any specific genre, and they never had just one lead singer. they just did what made them happy, and were very successful.

What's integrity?

By integrity I take it you mean didn't "sell out"? Springsteen comes to mind as being true to his art. But most bands start out loyal to the music, but once they get into the studio with management and producers, they must adjust their sound to appeal to the largest audience possible. Blondie comes to mind when I think of a band that "sold out". Successful bands can be true to the music, Red Hot Chilli Peppers is an example of a band that didn't have it, but gained it over the years.

I think the Chili Peppers have always had musical integrity. Linkin Park had it at one time (their first album was alright) but then they lost it and tried to gain it back by teaming up with Jay-Z (which made them suck even more). Now they are just a bunch of whiney sounding, pissy-*** posers. As far as who never had it, Milli Vanilli obviously! Who didn't have it but gained it? HHHHMMMM...I think maybe Blue October or the Bloodhound Gang.

Musical integrity is creating music as art, from the soul. Artists tend to lose it when radio play and album sales become more important than creativity and self expression.

Someone who stays loyal to the fans. They start out with a good style and stay with it. Sure, they may go for a somewhat different style (experimentation), but if it's towards something more commerical, the band has lost its musical integrity. I think everyone starts out with a little bit (unless they're purely in it for the money), and as they build up with more albums, they gain more and more. You can lose it (like Metallica selling out and Lars Ulrich going against fans), but it's possible to regain it (Judas Priest went towards a more commercial style in the 80's but came back with a more traditional style with their album Painkiller).

huh?

Musical integrity is in the eye of the beholder. I think ANYONE can label a band with names like "Sell Out" but the fact of the matter is NO BAND stays the same as they were when they first came out, Some get better with age, some go downhill, but its for the listener to distinguish that. It's not something you can just point out at random to someone else.

I think it's staying true to what you believe and not caving in to the industry and trying to be something you're not just to make more money and win a popularity contest.Who has it:Slayer,Hatebreed,Lamb Of God,Shadows Fall,Machine Head,Tool,Alice In Chains,Pantera--Who doesnt:A7X,Disturbed,Nickelback,MCR,FOB,... lost it:Slipknot,Metallica,Atreyu,Mudvayne
Who gained it:Sevendust,Nirvana,All That Remains,Soulfly,Himsa,Kittie

Silverchair has none..

Sell outs.

Integrity- doing what you love and want, no matter what;
Rory Gallagher
Motorhead
Megadeth
zeppelin
phish
the tragically hip
joseph arthur
bob marley
neil young

who doesn't have it?? ALL rappers and hip hop "artists', dance/pop/techno, and people like Avril Lavigne and celine dion- basically, ego and money driven sellouts.

Musical integrity - making music from the heart instead of primarily for financial gain.

Who Has It? - Sonic Youth

Who Doesn't? - Fall Out Boy

Who had it, but lost it? - Goo Goo Dolls, Liz Phair

Who didn't have it but gained it? - Once you don't have, it usually doesn't magically reappear.
