How do you "get into the music scene"?

I love music, and listen to any band kind of rock(hardcore, emo, screamo) that isn't as mainstream.I'm kind of getting sick my bands. Most of the time I don't really have enough money to go all the shows I want to.I live in Philadelphia.I can't really figure how I'm suppose to find out about local bands and stuff.Any tips or ideas?(yes I know it's kind of a dumb question.I'm still asking it anyway)
thanks.

Myspace and purevolume.
Just search your zip code and listen to ones that look interesting.

Go to websites of clubs around your area and see who is going to be playing and listen to the bands.

Or when you do go to shows, watch the opening acts, because a lot of the time they are local bands who just get the slot and are actually really good. I've found about half of my present favorite bands by going to shows for other bands.
When things like Warped Tour come around, take advantage. There are so many underrated bands on Warped. Don't just go to the Main Stages. Go listen to bands at the smaller stages.

Basically, just be open to new music, and listen.

go to local venues and talk with ppl and converse

There was a record store near where I live that had shows almost every night, but if you don't have alot of local venues or money and you'd like to find new bands, check out www.allmusic.com. You can search by using genre, moods, or bands similar to the ones you already listen to.

find a good local club in your area and it's the best way to see good music. Most bands tour clubs at the beginning and middle of their career anyway and club shows are way more personal.

Really the best way is to go to shows. I guess Myspace helps me out a little bit.

1. I was a former roadie for a alternaitve band back in the 1990s called " Verdedera Fe". My good friend was the old drummer in that band. I was his personal drum roadie ( the drum tech who tunes, carries all your drum gear in and out of cars onto stages, carries your drum sticks, makes sure your cymbals, stands, drums are OK during your LIVE gigs). Great job and the female groupies are a great plus too....=)

2. I hanged out at a lot of various Rehearal & Recording studios in southern California in my own Solo Career as a Solo Artist myself.

3. I also worked at the Sound Arena Rehearsal Studios in Garden Grove California for 3 months back in 2002. I was also responsible for cleaning 9 rehearsal rooms daily on my shifts, replacing drum heads, replacing cracked cymbals, adjusting EQs/Mics for bands, vacumming, selling music products, emptying trash cans, move heavy guitar amps, clean toilets, book bands, answer phones & band complaints, collect money from the bands & etc. It's a very hard job...but someone has to do it ...=)

4. I also worked at West LA Music in Westwood, Ca back 2001 for couple of months. I sucked as a Drum salesmen back then. I was fired because I didnt sell enough drum merchandise to keep my job.

5. I entered 7 drum contests. 6 Guitar Center Drum - offs and 1 Sam Ash 2000 finals from 1999 -2007. That chapter is over...=) No more!!! =)

6. I'm still working on my Solo Artist Cds/DVDs

7. I made a lot of mistakes along the way, but now I have the wisdom to go to even higher heights in my music Career ...=)
