Does anyone else here think tool sucks in concert?

I just got done seeing tool and i have to say that i am not impressed (and i do like their music). Visually i think that tools show was amazing. However, i felt that maynard had NO onstage personality what so ever and that the lighting was to compensate for his lack of personality. Throughout half the concert it also seemed like the audience was singing the songs ten times louder then maynard was. I have seen tool one other time and did not like them but, i thought i would give them one more chance. Does anyone else here think that tool puts on a bad show?

Well, I've seen Maynard perform with Tool and APC. I enjoy his performance much more with APC because he interacts with the crowd and he stands out front. With Tool their intention is for the audience to focus on the video screens and not the band. Maynard does stand in the back and I recall him being behind a screen for about half the set... but that's just his thing. He doesn't want to be the center of attention when performing with Tool supposedly because these songs are very personal and he feels more comfortable in the back. I still think it was an excellent show overall because of the lighting and video screens... I saw them back in 2002, I'd like to see them again. My problem with that show was I had a guy behind me screaming "Yeah!! Kick a**!!! wooo!" in my ear during a long deep instrumental.. haha, that was aggravating.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about their live shows:

tool suck.
nothing else needs to be said.

I have never seen them in concert, because they make me want to blow my brains out. Maybe it's because I have a short attention span, but their songs are like one incredibly long nightmare. Friends argue with me about this all the time, but I think they blow.

Well, unfortunately, haven't seen them on concert. Maybe they are not that good in concert and you are right. But I have to say, their music is really good. I love their songs, lyrics, their music in general. They are different than the others. As I told a good friend a few days ago, Pink Floyd is not for everybody. They are not like other bands. With Tool is just the same. Normal, ordinary people cannot like them. I think that if you have a huge imagination, you can like their music.

Maynard has no personality 'fullstop'. When god was handing out 'humour' and 'personality', poor Maynard missed the boat altogether...I would rather have my teeth drilled than have a conversation with Maynard (i'd imagine the experience would be fairly similar though...)

It depends on the venue. Some places they sound great, some places not so much.

I saw them at Radio City Music Hall. Best show ever.
I saw them at the Meadowlands. Not quite as good.
I saw them at Coachella 2006, about a quarter mile from the stage and in a sea of 500,000 people. Not very good at all.

Yes, Maynard shows very little personality during Tool shows, but he does sing well, and the band always plays well. But their sound isn't really conducive to the acoustics of a lot of venues.

I think most bands suck in concert, Metallica & Aerosmith however have a clean sound and do a great show.

This first time I saw them live they had an excellent stage presence. This tour was not about the band but the music and visuals. Not even about the vocals as much. Like others said, it does depend on the venue too but how can you not like the lasers and awesome stage?

i love both tool and APC.....i thought both were amazing live, somebody said maynard had no humour??--i thought he was hilarious onstage with APC--- at one point he gave us a "word of the night", it was "clown penis"--whenever we heard the word "clown penis" throughtout the night, the crowd had to say"hey ho, lets go!!--trust me , it was hilarious!!..i havent seen tool live since the lateralus tour but i did notice he was a little more lowkey compared to when i saw them on aenima tour... but i think they did it purposely to emphasize that maynard is not the focal point of the band and that the whole band is equally impoortant and talented..i think that is why maynard's spot on the stage was in the back by the drummer and both guitarists were up in front...but he did talk to the crowd, make cracks, etc..
