Why Do Bands Like Journey & Styx Get Such A Bad Rap Here?

I mean I understand hating the saccharine bubblegum that made up the latter parts of their careers. But I just cant help but wonder if any of the bashers have taken the time to listen to some of their earlier works?
Journey for example, put out three albums before tehy even discovered Steve Perry
Journey
Look Into The Future
&
Next
All three are full of excellent "Proggy" instrumentals
And their first two Perry albums
Infinity and Evolution are both quite good hard rock albums as well.
And Styx was an awesome Prog band in their early days, the songs "The Serpent Is Rising" and "Suite Madame Blue" are both amazing.
just wondering what Your thoughts on this were

Yes sarah
It's Deep Purple-Burn

I was wondering when someone would bring up massive radio overplay

Tha's a great contributing factor certainly

I think these bands get a bad rap, because their American. Some Prog fans and Rockers, don't get that the
American style is a little different.

I agree about Journey's first 3 releases (just listen to the cut - KAHOUTEK - awsome!!). Journey started-out as a super-group -- all of their members from other great bands. I eventhough they became less progressive when Perry joined them, I still think that they wrote some very good compositions and Neil Schon's guitar playing was extraordinary!!

On Styx - give me a break!! I saw them in concert before and after they had Tommy Shaw. The Equinox tour was amazing, eventhouh they were the opening of a 3-band show. The last time I saw them was Pieces of Eight and again - FANTASTIC!! These guys were incredible musicians and use MANY progressive elements. Just cause they wrote a ballad like BABE, doesn't justify their total career.

And -- Please - Do not dare insulg KANSAS -- They were the BEST PROGRESSIVE BAND the U.S. ever had.

because most of the people that use this are from a completly different generation.

I guess people only think what gets played on the radio is all a band truely is, which is kind of funny cause most of the songs that get played on the radio can be considered "the Worst of...." for plenty of bands. Darn the radio!!!!

Burn? :0 )

hey now i even like thew latter stuff too

They sometimes get bashed because they r "wimpy bands" I have seen the bashing by the metal heads...love to bang my head all the time, but U gotta get romantic to:) Evolution is one of my fave's of Journey and I am more the Steve Perry generation...people like to pick on the popular bands or the radio air play bands, but Styx had some great early music and their concert here in Houston back in August jammed:) c ya!!!!

STYX....Come On!!!! MR.ROBOTO should be the official song for the n.f.l!!!

I never got that either, Darth. They & Kansas & Boston were all called "corporate" or "faceless" rock back in the day. Funny how many of those bands are getting more credit now.

Early Styx & early Kansas is Very proggy! Love it!

Why people knock prog in general is beyond me. What is so wrong about wanting to see how far rock music can stretch beyond "hey baby" lyrics & ideas?

Styx & Kansas took those prog elements of thought & approach & put em in a radio-friendly result.

Many have not investigated the early albums. They assume the lite rock ballads are their whole cataloque not realizing the good early albums that actually made the bands popular.

Journey's "Feeling the Same Way" and "Anytime" off the Infinity album are two great songs that should be listened to together.

I think people tend to judge music a lot.I grew up with all the "oldies" from my dad listening to it.It's like anything else in this world you need to get to know the music before you bash it.My husband and I saw Journey in concert with Steve Augeri performing in 2002,it was awesome,I think we were the onley 21 yr.olds:)

Because the corporate stuff is what people look at because it's the stuff that took up most of their careers. All of those bands were very talented, but they just didn't use that talent properly.

Although I must admit Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" is unusually catchy. Ugh...

I dont know. I am 14 and I love Journey and STYX. in september STYX came to Louisville KY with Def Leppar and Fourener and I saw them. STYX and journey made some relly great song. you can lisen to a Jurney cd without skipping any songs. and STYX made some great songs like Lady,Too much time on my hands,Renigade,Come Sail Away, blue coller man, Grand Illusion, and Mr.Roboto. personaly I dont Know why they do. Journey And STYX are Great bands PERIOD!!!

most people would rather listen to falloutboy.
i personally dont like journey, but styx's early work is quite good. i prefer kansas and tom petty tho. i dont bash those bands even if i dont like them, they have talent. i only bash the *** radio pop bands that 10 year old girls like. i hate this punk/pop/poser emo genre that has overrun the radio.
but most people are ignorant so thats why they bash it

I think people spent too much time listening to Don't Stop Believin' and didn't look past that (I like Journey but I really can't stand that song). Same with Styx, I think they are judged a lot by Mr. Roboto.

I love both bands as my music tastes vary far and wide both to what is out there now and what has been released in the past.

From Journey, I love the song "Lights" because it has more of a bluesy feel to it. From Styx, I love the songs "Crystal Ball" and "Miss America". I think as an entire album, The Grand Illusion is just awesome.

I like both bands... Styx was very popular where I grew up, and my fave album from them is 'Equinox'.

I like them... I never really noticed

"HANGMAN IS COMIN DOWN FROM THE GALLOWS, AND I DON'T HAVE VERY LONG!!"

Because , unfortunately, most of the people on here are too young to appreciate what really good music is. Its just not something they know, and most will never take the time to listen, either.

I'm 22 and I love Journey! For me though, Steve Perry was Journey. Never really listened too much to Styx though...

They have a more softer coice though. They really aren't like rockers, they are girlie and soft. I like some of their songs but I mean you wouldn't rock out or wave your hair back and forth to their music.
