What if there was a Rock Idol...?

Many people hold the opinion that shows like Pop Idol, X-Factor etc. are "ruining music".
What if instead of Pop Idol/American Idol etc, there was a Rock Idol? Do you think true musicians would be made/discovered, or would it just be pop idol with guitars?

Your views...

Mike; -thinks-...Nope, nothing's coming to me.

NO, NO ,NO,

True rock musicians work there arses off to get where they are. They have real love/passion for there music. A prime example is Machine Head. For years and years they got put down. "Yeh a couple of good tracks on there latest album, but........). However after years of hard work and not being flashed around as a product, there last 2 albums have shaked the metal world. There latest has won so many awards, and they are one of the biggest names in metal at the moment, through hard work. If you want it you will get it through your own determination.
The only good thing about these Pop Idol things are the people who think they can sing/perform. Poor buggers why do they put themselves through it.
I think we are lucky with our genre as the the real musicians shine through true talent and not the fact that a judge wants to s拢^g you or you look good for the camera.
Sorry to babble on but personaly i think it`s all fake and very disrepectfull to true musicians.

There thats me done and bloody hell i feel better for it. Thankyou.

There kinda was.
I can't remember what it was called, but Tommy Lee was looking for a new singer for his band.

It was fabulous. Real individuals who didn't have to fit the bubblegum, stereotypically good looking box.

I think there would be a few genuine rock singers with a bunch of potential, but they wouldnt win if America is voting.

I think it'd be too Pop-ish because of the station and times it'd be on so it would just be a bunch of MCR's and Staind's

I think CBS tried to that once or twice with Supernova or something. That really sucked. Rock Idol, terrible idea. Try to make it like everyone else, gigs that pay 25 bucks living out of your van. lol

What about record companies, stop encouraging these ridiculous supposedly talent shows and go out trawling the live music venues of the country. Then we might get some good, talents musicians back in our charts. Not a load of 1 hit wonders with computers making them sound good.

I think the purpose of such shows are to find marketable "artists", people who are inoffensive, wholesome, family-friendly and generally palatable to the public. As we know, these aren't really qualities that can be attributed to rock musicians, so the likelihood is that a show like that geared towards rock would just end up being a hollow charade aimed at finding the most out of control, stick it to the man, don't care what what nobody says rock star cliche they could find.

I think there have been shows like this in the US, so maybe some of our American pals can shed some light on how it turned out.

Bad things man.................... bad things.

(Bonus points if you remember where that line came from.)

What about Daughtry from American Idol? I haven't really listened to his music but he seems to be doing fairly well in the rock world.
I think a rock idol show would be great but would the true rock artists actually want to perform on a TV elimination show?
Would enough real rock fans watch?
I suppose any media exposure is good for an upcoming artist though.

It would be more interesting to watch as long they included guitarists, bassists, keyboardists and drummers as well as vocalists. But having said that, it most likely would end up being just like Pop Idol with manufactured rock.

I'd shoot myself in the face. Reality TV leads to nothing but trouble.

I wouldn't really support it because the majority of what I listen to is DIY, underground stuff.

I wouldn't want ANY rock *I* listen to to come from some tv producer in a suit in some boardroom.

Don't you remeber when they did that crap show about finding INXS new lead singer? It was, as I've said, crap.

it wood be kwl

There was, remember 'Rockstar: INXS' when INXS were looking for a singer so they could get back together again.

Some c*nt called JD Fortune won.

i think it would be a great idea to have a rock idol groups with proper instruments
