They've done Janis Ian's "Society's Child", Nashville Teens "Tobacco Road", The Beatles "I Am The Walrus" and so on. I think my favorite is their version of the Weight. I may even like it better than the Band's (and The Band is one of my favorites)....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-PNdOLrj... I would have to say J.D. Loudermilks 'Tobacco Road' would be my favorite, followed closely by 'Evil Woman', written by Larry Weiss. Larry was also responsible for penning 'Hi Ho Silver Lining' for Jeff Beck. The Troggs also did a cool rendition of 'Evil Woman'.
'I am The Walrus' is a classic also, but by that time Gary Wright was no longer a part of the band. The vocals on 'The Last Puff' were handled mainly by Mike Harrison. Chris Stainton helped fill out the keyboard sound on that album.
There was a band called 'Art' who were essentially pre-'Spooky Tooth' minus American Gary Wright. They released an album in 1967 titled 'Supernatural Fairy Tales', that's really quite good, and worth seeking out. The album features a song called 'What's That Sound', and it's credited to 'Mills'. The song is really a heavier version of Buffalo Springfields 'For What it's Worth', penned by Stephen Stills. It's a wonderful cover as well.
If you liked 'The Last Puff', then I think you'll enjoy 'Art' also. Mike Harrison handles keyboards and vocals here too. Many people used to get his voice and Gary Wrights voice confused. Spooky Tooth! I love them...great to meet another fan (there aren't many these days).
I think my favorite is also the Weight. Mike's voice is just beautiful and a bit rough (though, not too rough). I get chills listening to them. |
