Is grunge rock and emo rock the same thing?

Is grunge and emo the same thing? I was told from a lot of people that it is because both genres whine and complain about how life sucks. if they're not the same thing, could someone please explain to me why they're not the same?

This is a laughable proposition at best. They're not close, similar, second cousins or any other sort of relation to being the same thing. Shall I list the vast differences?

1. Grunge may have had its share of complaining, but it never whined.
2. If you listen to your standard grunge song and remove all vocals you will notice that the music alone is moody, unlike emo.
3. Grunge started the alternative revolution. Emo sent it back to the dark ages.
4. Nirvana never came up with song titles that made your eyes roll into the back of your head like A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More 'Touch Me'
5. Grunge actually had talented musicians as opposed to glorified boy banders.

no

they have totally different sounds.

although the lyrical content may be similar (even though neither are "whiny"), they have a totally different sound.

just listen . . . does rites of spring sound like pearl jam?

no. i rest my case.

Grunge seems to be depressing,and heavy, and very lyrical, if you know what I mean, heavy lyrics, meaning, whatever.

Emo rock seems to be more poppy in most cases, more mainstream, yeah, if you listen to the words, it could be garbage, but its mostly pop music but the members don't dance, and they play instruments.

Grunge= Good.
Emo= Not Good.

There. Anyone can understand that

Absolutely not!

The thought of Soundgarden and Mudhoney being in the same category with MCR and FOB makes me shudder.

No, they are not the same. Grunge was a genre that began in the 80's and ran through the mid-90's that can be characterized by bands like Nirvana--and was often defined by the Seattle music scene, it is heavy, rough, and while it often does have depressing lyrics the vocalists tend to be more aggressive and loud.

Emo developed in the mid-90's out of the Washington DC underground scene, the lyrics tend to be very confessional and personal and the vocal style tends to emphasize the emotion the singer is feeling, the music is usually less heavy than grunge.

No, not at all. Most people have no idea what emo really is, so they bash it. Real emo rarely has whining; thats only modern bands like FoB and The Used.

MCr isn't emo.

Grunge actually means something deep, not just whining about your girlfriend breaking up with you. Real emo msuci really actually isn't too bad, its bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and other crappy boy bands that make it look really bad.
