Do female bands get more popular than they should just because there isn't as much of them?

I am not prejudice in any way. I'm just curious.

*Aren't, sorry bad grammar today.

Not in my opinion. Not great ones, anyway. I look at the seventys, the golden era of rock and roll, and I can remember a few all female bands, like Heart, and bands with female singers or "frontwomen" like Joan Jett and the Blackhearts or Blondie, but most of the icons were male. Jimmy Hendrix, Led Zepplin, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. So I don't think so, no.

Well, people only like Paramore because of that chick.

I mean, no one can like them for their music, surely.

Oh, and Arch Enemy have a ridiculous frontwoman. That ***** can scream.

No, their popularity increases because they have breasts.

Yes, I think that's the reason.

yes they do, when your in a female group, you just have to be pretty with a knockout body to be popular, for instance the spice girls, their songs never even made sense, but people loved watching them dance around......thats just my opinion...

maybe, i don't think youre prejudice, im female and I hate every female band I know. Theyre like "hey, im in a band so that means i'm badass"

I guess they get more attention

Female bands only gain popularity if they are extremely GOOD, or they have fantastic managers and promoters, OR, they have extremely attractive front women. Girl bands RARELY gain popularity with women UNLESS they are GOOD. MOST gain popularity because the MEN find them attractive.

yea I think so.Just look at Paramore. The chick of Paramore isn't that good but they are all over MTV.Their music isn't that good it's just really catchy and most of the people like them becasue of Hayley.

yeah i believe that.like paramore and evanescence.i love them and i love their voice.i'm so used to listening to guy bands so to listen to girl bands...is pretty damn awesome

Now, do you mean bands that are just female, or are you including bands with 'frontwomen'?

From what I've seen, 'all-girl' bands appeal to the teenage and tweenage market, because it makes it easier for them imagine it's them singing.

For bands just fronted by women, I think it's completely different. Back in the 60's and 70's, when the likes of :~
Janis Joplin ; Grace Slick ; Stevie Nicks ; Christine McVie ; Ann & Nancy Willson ; etc.
were all starting out, women had to work more than twice as hard as the men to make it in the music industry. *
In fact, it's those women who made it possible for todays girl bands to have music careers.

*The exception to that is the women Folk singers of the 60's ~ because Folk was already an accepted genre for women to be popular in.

Edit :~
Well Jake, as the saying goes 'Sex Sells'.
Unfortunately, it means that the handful of truly talented women out there, if they happen to also be good looking, are automatically lumped in with the 'looks, but no / little talent' majority.

well, yes and no, i mean people like them because of their music, and well yeah, beacuse there are only a few of them.

I think bands with lead girls tend to be extremely catchy in their lyrics. I know everyone keeps using Paramore as an example, but also look at Flyleaf. Even though they are a lot harder, I think "Cassie" is pretty catchy.

First of all, I like listening to Paramore because Hayley has a really good voice that sounds different than everyone else.

Secondly, I think bands with female singers are rarely promoted unless they DO have a good-looking frontwoman. It's terrible that image has to be everything for female bands (or even bands in general) and they can't just have talent to become popular. I don't think they become popular just because there is not many of them, it's just the image thing. Most of the time. It's a tricky business.

In the Rock world, it's sort of become a gimmick. But I know for a fact, that a lot of women want to find a female fronted band. It's sort of a women pride thing. It works too. The last really good, female fronted punk band I've seen was Naked Aggression.

Finally, a rock question I can smack a wrestling analogy to!
It's sad to say Jake but sex sells. In the WWE they have female wrestlers, they call them "Divas" most of them are not very good wrestlers, but they all share several traits in common. They all wear very little, they are all super built, and they are all drop dead gorgeous. I call em eye candy. Why are they there? Ratings, plain and simple. Same thing applies in today's super commercial and poppy music industry. If your "Hot", You are gonna sell albums, simple as that. Just goes to show what a shallow and narcissistic society America has become in the last 40 years if You ask Me.

And I am not prejudiced in any way either, I judge on ability and character, not looks or sex.
And I'm an American that loves America, this modern society just makes Me a tad sick is all.

I think it's actually been the opposite as the female bands went through a tough stretch of neglect after the original onset of all those riot grrl acts. Nowadays, I think the industry has a lot more female fronts receiving attention and deservedly so. Of course, if this question was inspired by the rise of Paramore, I completely understand where you're coming from.

definitely, because if a women singer or a girl band is hot then they will get more popularity with men whether they have talent or not

Well you need to take a look into perspective as they are simply girls in a guys world, so they are automatically going to get more attention. I enjoy Paramore, I feel she is a good singer/songwriter, and her style goes well with the music. However with some bands they get signed simply due to the fact they have a female lead singer. In This Moment for example, I love in this moment, however I feel Maria is the only talent in that band aside from the drummer, the guitar parts are extremely simple and I feel that she carries that band with her lyrics and vocals. And it's absolutely true that bands get more attention with a female singer, Arch Enemy for example. I never even heard of them before Angela joined the band, granted she is an incredible vocalist, but I feel they would have never gotten the same amount of exposure with their former lead singer.

Well, it all depends.

Someone being attractive (attractance, if you will) can affect the role of a band, that is true. But female bands are the same as male bands, people should (not that they always) rate a singer or band by their vocal talent, not by popularity or attraciveness. But, I am not prejudice.

However, I believe that there are an even amount of girl singers (not bands) as there are for guy bands. Being said that, while there are lesser bands (if lesser is a word) in the female categories (for some peculiar reason, I don't know if that word is spelled correctly), there are lesser independent male vocalists.

So in short terms, everything evens out between male and female singers and bands.

But that is honestly, merely my opinion. ;-)

Oh, and one more thing....both of them are damn awesome!
I just don't care about the people in the band, but the music.

The lyrics should be purposeful, or else we would have lost our right minds and think of no reason to create music at all.

I don't think it is because there is a shortage, I believe it is because they can market themselves better. There are so many girl fronted bands that people don't care about, in fact in my experience most of my friends don't even like girl singers. I like In This Moment, Lacuna Coil, Stolen Babies, Kittie, however, take for example, Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil she was voted "Hottest Girl In Metal" that boosted album sales. It's all about marketing and girls are a lot easier to market, especially when they are pretty. All the guy bands start looking the same.

i dont just like paramore because of "that chick"

shes an amazing frontwoman
her voice is amazing

and paramores songs are too

she isn't the normal conventional pretty kind of girl
she's short,
doesnt wear tons of make up all the time
has different hair, orange

not many people have that colour hair, on purpose!

also

evanescence
yes amie is stunning

but so is her voice

i think so

well me personally i don't really like female bands voices. i don't like a girl songers voice as much. but i think a lot of girls like girl bands. but a lot of guys dont. and i dont really know any all girl bands. i only know bands that are all guys exept the lead singer is a girl. i guess i like evanescance though

i think they get more attention from the media because of having a girl, which makes them popular. it's just something different and shows that girls don't have to be hip-hop/ r&b people.

have you ever noticed that in bands with 1 girl, the girl is always the singer? why is that, it's sorta annoying, like saying "if you're a girl and you can't sing then you can't be in a band" i hate that (i'm not predjudiced agianst girl singers, i just think it's weird)

Have you ever heard Otep or the lead women from Arch Enemy,Bloodlined Calligraphy, they can rip it better than most men and Crisis has been doing it for over 10 years and she's like 4'11" and 90 lbs and can get it done,so not really in metal and hardcore because we dont care about that stuff as long as you're real cuz we can smell BS a mile away but it is cool when women like that can do what they do

I think so.
No offense to Paramore, but really the only reason they get played is because having a chick in a rock band is something "new". I agree with whoever said that in the 70s and 80s there were quite a few bands with frontwomen. I mean, Paramore is catchy and all but if Hayle had an amazing voice but looked like Chewbacca then I doubt that they would be playing in Hollister.

I wish there were more bands like Walls of Jericho!
