What happened with Led Zeppelin's concert in 1985?

I heard something bad happened at their conert in 1985 that they vowed never to perform live again.

Everybody had sound problems at Live Aid. Paul McCartney's vocal mike didn't function. Bob Dylan's monitors broke and he couldn't hear himself during his mini-set. Jimmy Page was handed a guitar way out of tune and pushed onstage in front of a billion people. The group was also under-rehearsed. Despite all that, it's not terrible Check it out here:

When they put the DVD out a few years ago the band refused to let them use the footage.

Led Zeppelin's reunion at Live Aid in 1985 was such a disaster that they refused to allow it to be included on the Live Aid DVD release.

It was at Live Aid, and there performance was sub-par to sat the least. They refused to allow there performance to be on the CD that was released.

Page has said that Phil Collins was not ready to play up to Zeps level. I've heard rumors that Page was drunk and his guitar was not tuned, staright out of the case and that Plant was having trouble with hitting notes.

I remember the Live Aid performance - not their best by a long shot.

Page was completely wasted - his eyes were just slits.

The biggest problem was "Kashmir" where the balance was totally shot. Listen to just the guitar in that song sometime and you'll realize that the riff you hum is actually the keyboards. But you couldn't hear that part at all.

Plant's voice wasn't that great, but it was comparable to what you'd hear from him today - people were expecting him to hit all the high notes.

All that aside a highlight was that they played "We're Gonna Groove" -I thought it was pretty good.

Apparently they only had one quick rehearsal for Live Aid. They played "Rock And Roll", "Whole Lotta Love" and "Stairway To Heaven". They had Tony Thompson from Chic on drums and Phil Collins decided to sit in at the last minute. Robert Plant was in the middle of a solo tour at the time so his voice wasn't in the greatest shape. Jimmy Page had given up heroin by this time but was still a hardcore alcoholic and cokie. He was pretty f-cked up at the show, and on top of his condition was having technical difficulties as well: his guitars were all out of tune, and he was playing pretty sloppy anyway.

Considering the perfectionists these guys are, it's no wonder they vetoed their performance from the Live Aid DVD. I don't know if they actually said they'd never do it again, but for sure they knew they'd never do such a rush job on a performance again...look at last night's 02 show: all that preparation really paid off- it was probably one of the best shows in Rock history by ANYONE. Of course, they're also clean and sober now...that's bound to make a difference too.

(I think a lot of people who've already answered have gotten Live Aid mixed up with the '88 Atlantic Records show...that's when they played "Kashmir", and, yes it was a disaster as well, pretty much for the same reasons...)
