Greatest rock and metal bands of all time?

of course modern music starts with the beatles, but you don't get into really defined modern rock until probably AC/DC, then you have black sabbath, aerosmith, a little nirvana, metallica, pantera, now you have bands like slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold, System of a Down, maybe a little Dragonforce... who else?

(while i'm not arguing that A7x is god awesome, they aren't really metal, i'd classify them as more hard rock)

black sabbath is way before ac/dc as most bands credit them and Led Zep for their influence..

Other then that arguably Aerosmith & The Rolling Stones would be a close tie on the greatest for playing all these years and adapting to each decade...

Could throw KISS in the mix as 1 of the greats...

KISS is the greatest rock/metal band of all time. Even if you discount the music, the fact that Gene Simmons discovered Van Halen, and that they jump started the career of AC/DC by having them open for them in the 70's, as well as the fact that virtually every significant musical force of rock and metal in the 80's and 90's cite KISS as one of their major influences cements them as the greatest rock and metal band of all time.

AC/DC, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, KISS, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, The Ramones, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, ZZ Top, and the Ozzy Osbourne Band.

Motley Crue was/is the best American Rock band. Not metal. Just good, party, turn-it-up Rock music. Look beyond the image and appreciate the music.
