Happiness is a warm gun There's a lot of stuff in there. First is the kind of dada pastiche in the opening two verses (lizard, hobnail...)
You've got a lot of sexual imagery (the gun as penis, the trigger as clitoris, the velvet hand).
And it seems he's drawing parallels between the orgasm and the act of shooting someone.
And of course a warm gun is both a sexual metaphor and the state a gun is in after it's shot someone.
Add to that the tricky 3/4 over 4/4 time signature at the end, reinforcing the dissonance and non sequitors in the lyrics, and you've got quite a nifty song. I understood this one was about shooting up drugs. (the 'gun' being the syringe) Totally shooting drugs. At least that is what I also heard. Eh.. syringe administered drugs...esp heroine which starts with warm feeling in the stomach and spreads throughout the body. i thought it was about suicide
the song title comes from an NRA magazine cover i think I think it was about sex but that is a touchy subject so the song included various idioms of a warm gun to be confusing as to the true meaning . Like what everyone else had said shooting drugs. |
