I am listening to My favorite right now
Barry McGuire's "Eve Of Destruction"
Soooo got a favorite protest or anti-war song?
What is it and why?
And wouldn't it be nice if some of the people in R&P could
"Give Peace A Chance"? Wait.... no one said Pink Floyd's Us and Them?
I love the way the song is so calm and relaxing and the lyrics are about war, such an interesting juxtaposition. And of course it was one of Rick's best compositions.
Yes, it would be lovely for us to Give Peace a Chance. Happy Christmas and War is Over!!!
Hope you're enjoying your holidays too! Well, it's one, two three, what are we fighting for?
Don't ask me I don't give a d@mn
Next stop is Vietnam
Well, it's five, six, seven open up the pearly gates
Well, there ain't no time to wonder why
Whoopee we're all gonna die!
Give it up for Country Joe and the Fish!!
Something newer? I'd go Township Rebellion - RATM. I like a lot of them, but lately the three that get me going are
A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall - Dylan
Masters of War - Dylan (although the Eddie Vedder version is quite good too)
War - Edwyn Starr I'm with sylvia on this one.
Country Joe rules.
NP: "Underneath" - Buckcherry Feel-Like-I'm-Fixing-To-Die Rag ~ Country Joe and The Fish
loved that since I first watched Woodstock!
And I agree with 'Eve of Destruction' ~ I was listening to that yesterday!
Edit :~
Does Buffallo Springfield's 'For What It's Worth' count?
Because I love that song too :) I love this song by Anti-Flag. They are the ultimate anti.
"I Don't Believe"
i learned about america from my first day in school
land of opportunity, land of the free
they told us we were blessed and fortunate
but they turned away my questions on homelessness
i don't believe (i don't believe)
i don't believe (i don't believe)
i don't believe (i don't believe)
i don't believe (i don't believe)
born into a national identity
a citizenship that defines the word "free"
but if we're so ******* free
why don't we even get a choice?
i never choose to be a citizen,
there was no choice given to make
i don't believe in america
or the "american dream"
i don't believe in nationalism
we're all the same
until the rich old men who control the world
find something they can't have
and they send us out there to kill each other,
let the rich fight their wars themselves
i don't believe... i don't believe...
i don't believe... i don't believe...
i don't believe... i don't believe...
i don't believe... i don't believe...
you've got nothing to gain, by fighting for them!

Let's hear it for the round pegs in the square holes.

CCR - Fortunate Son
Edwin Starr - War
Sam Cooke - A Change is Gonna Come
Black Sabbath - War Pigs Wow, when I read your question before seeing the details the 2 songs you mentioned popped into my head immediately!
I was against the Vietnam war so protest songs about that period are my favorites:
War - Edwin Starr
Universal Soldier - Donovan
Volunteers - Jefferson Airplane
Ohio - CSN&Y John Lennon's "Sunday Bloody Sunday"
If you haven't heard it I suggest to everyone to download it, as it is quite good.
NOT the U2 song. Wake Up by Rage Against The Machine War Pigs by Sabbath...
The Fish Cheer/I Feel Like I'm Fixin To Die Rag by Country Joe McDonald
Edit: I Ain't Marching Anymore by Phil Ochs. great tune CSN&Y Ohio. "Imagine" John Lennon and the cover of it by A Perfect Circle was great too AVENGED SEVENFOLD - CRITICAL ACCLAIM
So how does it feel to know that someones kid in the heart of america
Has blood on their hands, fighting to defend your rights
So you can maintain the lifestyle that insults this family's existance
Well, where I'm from we have a special salute we wave high in the air
Towards all those pompous asses who spend their days pointing fingers Hello Dear friend! Kisses.
I love that Pink song "Dear Mr. President"
I don't like Pinks music but that is a very good song!
If you are on line drop me a word... I miss you. I have a lot going on and need a friend! I would agree with "War Pigs"...classic.
My favorite, though, is Lennon's "Happy Christmas (War Is Over)". The one by Rage that goes "F-you I won't what you tell me!"
Also:
"Hip Hop" by Dead Prez.
"The Rapeover" by Mos Def.
"Bin Laden" by Immortal Technique. Walk-Pantera
911-Public Enemy BYOB by System of a Down
Iraq should never have been. Give Peace a Chance/John & Yoko is my fave......
Peace Train/Cat Stevens
Whats goin on/Marvin Gaye "All I Have Left Is My Poor Johnnie's Hubcap" by Mad Goes Rock'nRoll.
Other than that I think that Protest songs are an easy way to spread Propaganda and get other people to do your bidding, when if you are truly concerned about any Issue -- roll your sleeves up and get your tail out there and put some sweat'n tears into it. IMHO
I hope I did not offend anybody -- I think I got carried away with my own "issues" -- For compositional quality, I'd go with War by Edwin Starr -- it's arranged well, has a lot of punch, and gets the message across.
...and Hats-off to Bowzer for picking Strange Fruit -- what a rare track, but so powerful -- I wish I would have thought of that :-) "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday
"John Brown" by Bob Dylan
"What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye
"Fight The Power" by The Isley Brothers now that i think of it, i didn't hear it this year, but my entry is "alice's restaurant" by arlo guthrie. a (thanksgiving) classic that is also a protest song regarding vietnam. For What it's Worth : Buffalo Springfield
What deserves to be protested more than a government abusing it's own peaceful citizens? |
