For people in the Rock/Pop section...your opinion on rap?

Do think rap is real music?

I don't.

I just got bashed for asking for poorly written/profane/degrading/popular raps in the rap section. I got a lot of answers. But then when I said I said it was for an essay about rap not really being music they changed their answers to insult me....haha. So insult me if you disagree, I don't really care. Tell me if you agree. Whatever.

But what do you think?

I don't consider it music for the following reasons:

typically very poor lyrics, extremely illiterate lyrics and pretty hard to comprehend what they are trying to say...kind of like 3 year olds.

Lack of melody or singing ability

The background music is generated by computers, and typically only has about 3 different pitches.

It's the decay of modern society.

Its music, i don't want to hear it , though.

i like some rap, but mostly not. I like Dr Dre, Public Enemy and Pittsburgh Slim and the occasional hip hop song, but mostly I'm an indie/alternative rock kid =)

Forced Mental Overload has a good point - they don't play instruments, they just use a synthesizers and stuff. I like playing with synthesizers and keyboards, and if i was to join a band, that would be what I did, but the band would have stuff like guitars too.

Technically, rap is music. Sad as it is, it's true.

Another bad thing about rap: They can't rap live. The only ones I've ever seen (tv or at the concert) that don't sound like crap, and aren't out of breath, of key, and off pitch are Pittsburgh Slim and Public Enemy.

rap i no music i would listen to for a couple reasons
1. whats the point it has no meaning like rock or metal
2. its just people saying there ganster 30 times
3. they dont even "make" music they have machines
not like old music everyone had to learn how to play
its just not as good as the kind of music im into

i disagree ^_^
i like all music including rap ^_^
i won't insult you or anything, because i respect your opinion ^_^

rap = crap with out the C

Honestly it's more of an opinion question. If you said i would have to listen to it if i said that it "was" music, then i would say no, but i don't have to listen to it if i don't want to so i'm gonna have to say that it "is" in fact music even if it's in a form that i don't like or appreciate.

It depends what you mean by real music...?

If you mean by actually rapping about stuff they have gone through, It's hard to tell. Because, as in every other genre we don't know what bands/artists go through.

But, Rap and Pop could have a little more creativity.

In Rap, its all about the tricks, the whips, the bills, the clubs. (with the exception of people like Lupe and Common.)

People like Soulja Boy and Lil Wayne aren't pimps! One is 17-18 and another has a daughter and is majoring in college in political science. They aren't gangsta either, they have security guards and paparazzi all around them, that's not what most people would call gangsta.

I won't express my opinions on Pop because you didn't ask for it.

The Webster Dictionary defines the word music as:

"An art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color."

If Rap falls under that category, then it is music, if not then its not. My tone is not to be mistaken for mean. It is just to prevent you from further typing for very long.

[*I cut out the repetive and rambley bits, it was bothering me.]

Just because you don't like it does not mean that it isn't music.
Most Rap /music/ isn't to my taste [with a few exceptions] but you have an ignorant attitude.
Just because Rap music is often written in slang that /you/ may not understand, or is written in such a way that makes it appear like a restricted code of language - doesn't mean it is poorly written. Not everyone is going to speak in standard English. Why must you look down on people because they don't use it? You're obviously entitled to your opinion, but to say an entire genre is not music is absurd.

edit; 1) /You/ find it hard to comprehend because /you/ do not understand it. They obviously do. Standard English is the language accepted by society - does that mean that any variations make a person illiterate?
2) Many rock bands use 'computer generated' equipment like drum machines. So?

edit; keywords of your last entry; "I think".
Music; http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=d...
PTown & <3; They do have a form of melody. Not always vocally but instrumentally. PTown - I know you're not 'being mean', but to be honest - I don't understand what you're trying to point out.

<3; I hadn't had a good ol' debate in a while, hehe. I'm going now [it's 3:35am].

edit; again you said "To me".
It's what /you/ think. It's not what you know.

And i didn't say that I don't understand what you were saying, I was talking to PTown Tigers - his or her point made no sense.

It seems that it's not /me/ that is a tad confused. -cough-

Ive heard some decent rap. Like I think Kanye West is ok. I think the songs about their lifes and how they made it out of all their hard times are good, I dont care at all for the whole Im in love with a stripper type songs. I dont really consider it real music however I know some people dont consider paramore and 30 seconds to mars real music so Im not going to judge what others listen to either.

I like a bit of the old skool...Public Enemy, Cypress Hill...I even like some Snoop...but I don't listen often.

it is real music.
that's like saying that techno isn't music just because it's made by machines.
not all rap sucks, just the majority of the stuff they play on t.v. nowadays.

It's music, but needs a whole lot of improvement. For one, it needs to be more artistic & original. Almost every rap song (& rap music video) is about the same old sh!t: money, hoes, sex, drugs, cars, the hood, the club, drinkin, & girls shakin their asses & guys gettin horny. I just don't even listen to it that much anymore. We need to get some real artists on the radio who's rap lyrics are actually original, positive, & real. If you ask me, rap is music but it pretty much sucks now.

Go see my answer! I think those ppl are just mad because you can read and write!! =P

@ Cinnamon: You gave the definition of music as:

"An art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color."

Now can you tell me how rap music is an art? How about the signifigance part? Is talking about drugs and all women being bitches very significant? How about melody? Here's the definition of melody: "the perception of pleasant arrangements of musical notes". Can you name me one 'pleasant' rap song?

Of course.....that's just my opinion...

Not really. Its good sometimes to shake your groove thing.I used to listen to it when I was a kid and I liked it. I felt like it was rebellious or something. But now that I have a daughter I feel alot of it is too insulting to women. I'm a metal mama at heart anyways.

dont like it...only 80s rap...LL Cool J and Run DMC...NWA .. Fresh Prince....De La Soul...Arrested Developement..Kid n Play....Beastie Boys....Ice Tea....Vanilla Ice haha Mc Hammer that was cool fun rap there....the dude who sunk Bust a Move...?

nope. it's not real music. it's just a beat and someone talking.
except for gym class heroes. they're actually reallyyy good
:]

Rap is definitely real music. If you think rap is degrading and obscene, then you really haven't been listening very hard at all. Sure, mainstream rap, for the most part, is pretty bad, but if you listen to 70's and 80's and underground rap, a lot of it is very good and very meaningful. There's a lot of talented rap artists out today too. Take M.I.A. for example. She writes about poverty and terrorism and money and a lot of other political issues, and the music at the same time is very catchy and fun. It's definitely worth listening to, in my opinion. Political rap is an entire genre by itself, and yes, it is music. Look a little harder and I'm sure you'll change your mind.

It's bad and 95% of the time, it is about butts or something.

its all pops, clicks, and buzzes to me.

Not real music IMO.
EXTREMELY annoying!
I put up with disco...but I will not put up with rap-crap.

Most rap, I don't like. However, if it really has something to say & is not angry swearing, demeaning of women or bragging of their excessive lifestyles, I'll give it a chance.

One exception is old Fresh Prince stuff, which is just fun to dance to & upbeat (esp the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" theme).

Way to stereotype a genre from what you hear on the radio. The music on the radio is pure crap; its uncreative and uoriginal. But dismissing a whole genre purely based on that is ignorant and moronic. And, yes, I also listen to rock.

i hate rap most songs are inappropriate and oh yeah they suck.

well my friend to put it simply:

there are virtually thousands of rock songs I like.

Rap songs I have in my IPOD

Coolio- Gangsta's paradise

EMINEM- Loose yourself

Sugarhill gang-Rapper's delight

THATS IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so for me it is one in a thousand I might like.

Ug, I like maybe, 2 rap songs. And that's only because they don't have a swear as every second word!

I DON'T LIKE IT
