My failing memory
The Web
I dont have enough years, I was a twinkle in my dads eye when that shiit was happening
For me, it's either 1967, 1965 or 1985.
1984 i wasnt even alive then but i like the music that came out
I'll give you a specific date; March 30, 1974. This is the date of the first Ramones concert and the root of old-school punk rock.
All the 90's! Grunge Forever :D
1967
Beatles - Sgt Pepper
Pink Floyd - Piper at the gates of dawn
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Love- Forever Changes
The Doors - The Doors
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
The Byrds - Younger than yesterday
Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground
Grateful Dead - Grateful Dead
Jimi Hendrix - Are you experienced
Cream - Disraeli Gears
To name but a few of the greatest year in recording history.
On August 17th 1965, the Beatles were scheduled to play one show at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. Harold Ballard (owner of the Gardens/Maple Leafs) sold tickets to two shows and told Beatles manager Brian Epstein the band would have to play twice. Epstein was furious, but agreed. The Beatles performed on one of the hottest days that summer, so Ballard ordered the start of each show delayed, the thermostats turned up, the water fountains turned off, and the concession stands to only sell large drinks (a fortune was made on drink sales.)
Old Harold was a con man, and a thief! But thanks to him I got to see The Beatles twice in one day!
1965 was a very good year!
Tough to nail it down to only 1. Some years are universally known for being rock turning points: (eg. 1957, 1964, 1967, 1969,1977, 1991...)
I can only give ya a time frame. My personal rock years time frame is about '77 to '81. Those were the years I was laying the groundwork for loving rock.

1967-1971 ~ so much great music in these 5 years, including the first 4 Led Zep albums.

Great year for music
It has to be 1980 for me. Albums released that year include:
Iron Maiden - "Iron Maiden"
AC/DC - "Back In Black"
Black Sabbath - "Heaven And Hell"
Judas Priest - "British Steel"
Motorhead - "Ace Of Spades"
Diamond Head - "Lightning To The Nations"
Saxon - "Wheels Of Steel" and "Strong Arm Of The Law"
If i was a teenager instead of a 7 year old back then, i'm pretty sure i would've been blasting out those albums on my record player.
I bet I'll get a whole lot of thumbs down haha, but 2004 for me.
I agree 1978 was a great year as was 1980 (Clash, Pretenders, Rush, Peter Gabriel,Talking Heads) and 1983 (U2, REM, Talking Heads, Metallica, Police, Billy Idol, New Order and ZZ Top.)
I'd say by far 1991 had the most amazing Rock album releases:
Out of Time...REM
Achtung Baby...U2
Nevermind...Nirvanna
Ten...Pearl Jam
(Black Album)...Metallica
Loveless...My Bloody Valentine
Badmotorfinger...Soundgarden
Blood, Sugar, Sex. Magik...Red Hot Chili Peppers
Gish...Smashing Pumpkins
Blue Lines...Massive Attack
Use Your Illusions II...Guns N'Roses
Temple of the Dog
Trompe De Monde...Pixies
Screamadelica...Primal Scream
edit: Mike T's right about 1967 (Pet Sounds is one of my Alltime favorites but that was 1966) but the Beatles' and Rolling Stones releases that year have aged badly; number #2 pick would be 1971 (Who's Next, Led Zeppelin IV and Sticky Fingers by the Rolling Stones...my favorite albums from each of those bands.)
Darth you forgot some other great albums from 1978: Some Girls by the Rolling Stones, This Year's Model by Elvis Costello, The Clash, We Are Not Men by Devo, Aja by Steely Dan and my Alltime Favorite Heavy Metal album: VAN HALEN.
