it seems that the twidling of the knobs in the studio has more of an effect than folks think. certain bands such as oasis seem to have too much volume,,,is this a reflection of the limited talents of the band or is it a desired effect? mettalica always seems to have excellent production values even at a high volume level. It's a desired effect.
"Kob Twidling" is not only about more volume it's about spacing the different instruments within the stereo spectrum, EQing each sound, adding effects to basic sounds.
Bands like Oasis, AC/DC... almost any two guitar "traditional" rock band will have one guitar far right and one guitar far left. This tends to leave a lot of space in the middle of the stereo sound so the engineer may well turn it up to fill the void.
Bands like Metallica, U2 & Def Lepard (Hysteria is a great example) use many guitar tracks to acheive a fuller sound. These tracks are spaced all across the spectrum and there you have it. A thick sound rather than a loud sound.
Watch the classic album DVD of the making of Hysteria. Mutt Lange had them record the guitar tracks by picking out each individual note of the chord to make one guitar chord. That's up to 6 tracks to make one chord.... can you spell OCD? |
