how can i erase breaks while going up into my vocal range it's a little like driving a stick shift- you learn by listening to the revs of the motor when the appropriate time to shift into the next gear.
We need to be able to not only listen to, but also feel this change coming up in our voices.
Depending on if you read music or not, you can always see in the printed music where your "gear shift" is going to happen. That way you can already start easing off the gas pedal and putting in the clutch to get through it. In singing terms, you will back off on the throat , which allows the vocal apparatus ( it's not just cords in there) to do its own shift maneuver, and add energy from your breath support. Not raw strength, but a sense of intensity or energy. Most singers feel more solid around the middle ( to their own sense of perception) when singing up high.
It's also important to remember that we cannot take the full weight or mass of our voice up into the high register, we have to be content with what we percieve as a lighter thinner sound. I don't mean falsetto ( are you a guy?) but that even full voice has a more slender feel to the sound beam. This happens to all voices ( except the Wagnerians), and constitutes a huge chapter in classical voice training. Since most folks speak in the lower part of theri register, it's only when we put on a cartoon voice, taht we ever get into the head register. ( that, or screaming in fear) So it's a sensation that most of us have no daily connection to, and have to learn slowly and carefully. ( tipitoeing in the dark?)
Lessons with a good teacher might be invaluable at this point. |
