Does a tonsilectomy affect a person's singing ability?

My tonsils are awwwful. They actually block my airway sometimes, it has gotten worse over the course of this year. I am a singer, I'm not bad, and I love doing it, it's my "thing." I am the lead singer in a rock band. I am afriad losing my tonsils could affect my singing voice negatively, but my tonsils are killing me!!! Anyone who sings and have had their tonsils removed, please let me know your experience and if it changed your voice...? THANK YOU!!!!

The band and I just recorded our first song we wrote....myspace.com/fatalredemptionband

physically speaking, like Nicole, it was a great help. The incidence of annoying sickness goes way down.
Singing-wise, it made a difference in being able to draw in a noiseless breath, and to be able to use all the space my teachers thought was supposed to be there ( but wasn't on account of the chronic swelling). I think being able to use the pharyngeal space made the most difference to me. Of course, as an opera singer, we really want to use that space. I don't know if it's that relevant to rock singers....
do take the time to heal before you dive back into it. also take the time to get reacquainted with your voice before you have to go on. take at least a couple of weeks for each.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery

no...it will IMPROVE your voice...good luck!

for the few weeks after dont attempt to sing. But after you are healed, you will have a more clear voice.

No you probably won't be able to at least very well while it's healing but it won't effect your singing because the tonsils don't have anything to do with vocalization

ive never had one... but im pretty sure itll improve your voice quality... and either youll range will stay the same or youll go a bit lower... so yeah no real downsides unless youve already memorized the soprano part of a choir set... lol

I wish ya luck!

Having your tonsils taken out is the best thing you could ever do for yourself. Especially if you're a singer. It improved my singing tremendously!! I really haven't had a sore throat since. Its been almost 3 years. I don't even see why they were created! They caused me nothing but pain until I got mine taken out. GET THE SURGERY!!! It will be career suicide if you don't

Your voice should be better, but when my grandson had his taken out, his voice changed to a little more horse sounding. Maybe it was because he was so you (about 4). Good Luck with your tonsils and your singing:)
