im a freshmen this year and i have a very low vocal range for a girl....like tenor or so..im an alto in choir
in order to be in choir next year, you must audition, not only am i terrified of audtioning, i cant think of a song im strong at...ALSO is there any tips for getting over fear of singing in front of people? i mean, by best friend is a music prodigy (he is 31, even though im 14 haha) and i catn even sing infron of him and i have known him for 8 years..ugghhh...he is the one i wish i could sing in front of..cuz he is a trained singer, piano player, and handbell ringer,,he has also published a bunch of pieces...Derek Hakes....grrrrr please help You don't say exactly what your vocal range is or what the audition requirements are, so I'm not sure how helpful I can be. If the audition isn't accompanied, just pick a song you like and start in whatever key best fits your voice. If you need a pianist playing with you, you could try looking through any alto/mezzo musical theater anthologies ( this series has good arrangements, and your choir teacher likely has them for you to look through: http://www.amazon.com/Singers-Musical-Th... ),
As for getting over stage fright, I completely sympathize. I've been singing for 14 years, and in lessons at a well regarded conservatory for the past 3 and a half years, and I still have horrible stage fright. The best advice I can give you is to try your best, and keep putting on a brave face and pushing though it. It might not make you feel any better about performing, but eventually you will be able to fool people into thinking you have confidence you don't feel, and that's half the battle. Also, the more training you get, the better you'll feel about your voice, and the more confidant you'll be. Try singing in small groups first, where you'll be more exposed than in a big choir, but still not doing a solo. Whatever you do, don't give up! Singing is fun, don't stress out too much about it! defanatly cher here are some videos:

her songs are good for any range!!!
she is awesome. i went to her concert! she is halarious! Do you know the term "contralto"?
It's basically a female voice that's even lower than alto (tenor range, essentially). Look around for a book of songs for contralto singers, there are a few good ones out there, though titles escape me.
Good luck with your audition. Hey, I also have a lower vocal range. Firstly keep in mind that it can be a bit of a blessing, because a low female voice can sound really beautiful and distinctive as opposed to these women who wail and screech. I would really recomend
The Way You Look Tonight by Fred Astaire/Tony Bennet etc
it IS a man's song BUT it's very low. Also just about anything by Frank Sinatra could work. Work to your strengths and don't be afraid to sing male songs, Most of them are easily adaptable or don't even make reference to a gender. The other good thing about that is you will stand out.
Good luck!!! |
