Why do vocalists/singers put their finger in one ear when they pull off a high note?

it may seem pretty obvious but I want to be sure that it's because one ear exposed to the high levels of noise is better than two ears exposed.

am i right?

So they can hear it internally and to focus. That's a fact.

For different reasons, good things to practice are using headphones while you sing and singing in the shower - close to the walls. You can really hear how well you are singing and you can improve quickly this way.

they do this so they can hear themselves....ahhahahahah

No. It so they can hear themselves, but its actually terrible for your sense of pitch.

Honestly, I have no idea why popular singers do this. I've been singing for years ("classically" trained), and I've never stuck my finger in my ear when I was singing a high note (nor have I ever seen any other trained singer do it). It doesn't help to actually hear accurate pitches; all it allows you to do is hear a muffled version of your voice louder than the background noise.

i think i agree with the thing of improving,,, this is a very good question! :\

SO I can hear myself and focus on hitting the note correctly that's why

Ive noticed JoJo does it alot particularly in her performances of too little too late. i suppose its just a focus thing so they can have a degree of control as it kinda gives them something to maybe hold on too. i think they have in ear monitors too.

It's funny to watch this happen, and there are several reasons behind it. One is just simply, monkey see, monkey do.

Another reason is that it is loud onstage, and sometimes the monitors (the speakers on stage providing the band's sound to the singer) can be over powered by the sound of the band. One way to combat this is to put a finger in your ear and hear your voice vibrate through your head - as opposed to hearing it come out of your mouth. It may work for some, but the sound carries different overtones when it comes out of your mouth, than it does when it rings in your head. (which can cause you to be "off key").

In the case of JoJo and other singers, sometimes they use In-Ear-Monitors. These are custom made ear pieces, like headphones or ear-buds, that fit in the ear to provide the bands sound, but at a quieter level. If a singer puts their finger on this ear piece, it can close the exterior sound from getting around the piece, and act as if you are turning up the volume for a brief moment.

And other times, the finger on the ear can signal the Monitor Engineer to turn up the volume to the person's In-Ear Monitor system.
