What artists should I listen to to improve blues improvisation?

I've been listening to Lou Rawls "Black and Blue" album and really enjoy his vocal style. Any suggestions?

Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, any of the jazz greats. I would also suggest you get a solid grounding in music theory, since it will help you understand how the melody is built off the underlying background playing. Understanding how music is put together will be invaluable to improvising well.

listen to alot of artist from back in the day expesically Ella Fitzgerald she does a lot of scatting also tho but definently singers from back then because they knew what the blues was really all about.

i would agree about ella fitzgerald. if you're gonna go down that alley, try roberta flack too.
