How did you first learn how to sing?

How did you first learn how to sing?

I've been singing for as long as I can remember, literally. I grew up in a very musical home, w/my mom singing me to sleep as a child and teenage sisters who would play their music loudly and sing along even louder. It came naturally to sing w/them. I also started learning nursery & primary songs at church, from age 18 months on. Once I started elementary school, there were talent shows and pageants, and I sang in various church, community, & school choirs, on through h.s. graduation.

I started professional voice training (which is EXPENSIVE if you're not a voice major in college! I received it as a gift, or I never would've been able to do it) after I had cancer surgery when I was 19 that caused me to lose several ribs and the use of my left lung. My diaphragm was damaged in the surgery as well, which means I can't hit very high notes anymore (I used to be a 1st soprano; now I do best singing alto) and can't hold out notes as long, but the voice training helped me learn to make the most of what I still have.

So I guess that was a long dragged-out way of saying it came naturally to an extent, then community, church, & school training/involvement led to taking it more seriously and learning that my passion could be more than a hobby.

But it doesn't have to be something you've done since childhood. ANYONE can learn to sing, w/proper training and a willingness to work as much as it takes. The only exceptions are the few (VERY few -- it's rare) people who are actually, literally tone deaf, or someone who's prevented by some other physical disability. .

in the shower.

it's not really something you learn. i just comes naturally. you just have to "feel" it. :)

When I got a small medal for singing, and a big one for stopping!

I didn't. Sadly. I sing to my heart's desire, but never in key.

I've always liked listening to music, and my mom is always singing along with music in our house, and we always sing in the car. I'm not too good at it, but I have a ton of fun and the more I practice, the more I can stay on my note. Just sing along with music!

I took voice lessons.

I never did.

either you got it or you dont! but if ur ok you can get lessons to improve.

I guess I just started imitating what was on the radio at a very early age...7-8ish. I've been singing ever since. ^_^

i love to sing!! some ppl say i sing ok some say i suck but i think i can improve and to do that i did some research on singing and breathing. singing is all about breathing so from the moment you practice and breath perfectly you can sing. then the problem becomes about pitches and being off-key. but those problems can be solved easily. just sing along sing along! =P i dont have much time and im still a teenager so i can solve things. i dont know about you, but if you want to learn how to sing do what i did - research. and then start having voice or vocal classes.

good luck and just believe, you'll fly :D

Its really a God given gift as I don't really do anything but open my mouth and just sing. When I learned that not everyone could do that, I was shocked. I just thought it was something everyone could do.
