Do any of you have any advice of what to do before singing in a concert?REFRAIN FROM VOCAL ACTIVITY:
Before any major performance do NOT over-use your voice. That means no yelling at children you are babysitting, no screaming at a concert, no shouting across a room, etc. Also, try not to speak OR SING any more than necessary 24-hours before your performance. Give your voice plenty of rest.
SLEEP:
Be sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before. This ensures your voice (and body) to be well rested and alert.
LUBRICATE:
- Warm tea. Prepare like normal, but DO NOT add any sugar or cream. Try to stay away from crazy flavored tea as well. Green tea is a good choice, or any natural tea flavorings.
- Lemon Juice. You can find little lemon-shaped containers at your grocery store in the produce section. Squirt three shots down your throat about 10 minutes prior to singing. It tastes pretty horrid, but it coats your throat very nicely.
- Water is an obvious suggestion, but what most people don't know is that extremely cold water actually makes your vocal chords stiff. As strange as it sounds, mild-temp. tap water is the best drinking water before singing. DO NOT use ice!
- Another suggestion aside from liquids is a hard mint. Suck on one 10-15 minutes before singing. The mint actually will open up your throat and clear phlem. The candy also coats your throat creating flexibility in your vocal chords.
WARM-UP:
Start at middle C with some light humming on some pentiscales (5-note scales) until your upper breaking point. Do the same with your lower breaking point. Then do outward (non-humming) pentiscales to both breaking points again. Continue adding upper and lower notes for about 10-15 minutes or until your voice feels fully flexible. After your pentiscales, sing the pieces you are performing, but sing them lightly. Do not over-sing or sing full out. Ease into using your full voice. Warm-up time should take at least 20-25 minutes before any major performance.
PRACTICE:
Be sure to know your pieces completely inside and out. Play with the different ways you can deliver each piece and see which works best. Practicing and knowing your stuff also helps with stage fright and any nerves you may feel. It will also help you with the delivery if you understand your pieces better!
Hope this helped! eat chilly peppers Drink alot of water, and practice practice practice!!
And dont be nervous =) Before singing in a concert, remember all that you've prepared for... Visualize yourself in front of your audience, their expressions, their cheers, screams, everything... If you're nervous, they say it helps to put something that absorbs the nervous energy, like a coin, in your shoe. |
