I need help with songwriting.?

i have recently joined a band and we are in the process of writing our first song, but we have run out of ideas and i need help desperatly or i think we will fold. we are heading more towards rock/pop type genre, if that helps.

sit around and talk about any relationship you (the band) have been in...family, friends, girlfriends, crushes, etc.

Then take all your ideas and write a small story. Simplify the story to lyrics and BAM you have a song.

OR

you can take a famous even in history or something that is currently going on in the world (global warming, war, anything)

OR

something cheerful like "lets be happy because blah blah blah"

There are no limits when it comes to writing a song. Grab a paper share some thoughts and write. :]

get high and write down everything that comes to mind

Dude, it isn't a good sign.

I play in a band and the best way to come up with stuff is to jam with everyone and a hook usually comes up and then you craft the song around it.

I always let the words come after the music, but that is just my style.

Good luck!

Almost every band has a least one song devoted to love. you could start there. There are more love songs than any other type of song out there. Next, I would try a song about someone who has inspired you in life. Maybe a person who first got you into writing or playing an instrument. Third, I would have a song focused on a high-paced beat, and have it a song that the audience would enjoy. This is perhaps your most important song, and if you make it good enough, you could possibly be set for popularity. Have the words center on something everyone can understand and relate to. Fourth, have a song that tells a story, may be of a journey or of a character learning from his past wrong deeds. As for what the words in each song are, i can not help you, because then, you would have to worry about copyright issues. (Trust me, that can get a little messy to deal with, you're much better of with songs you wrote personally.)

Here's a suggestion: Examine your favorite songs in the rock/pop category. Determine why you like these songs, and what kind of beat is going with it. Next, take some of your least favorite songs in this category. Determine why you don't like them, and how you would improve them.

Take a long walk along the shore, in the forest. Go to a place with mountains, lakes, rivers---engage the scenery, sounds. Walk through a busy market place, locally or abroad. You will be surprised, a few pieces of inspiration will come to you, unexpectedly. If that still doesn't work, sit in quiet meditation for an hour or so. Best of luck!

Writing music is opening yourself to new ideas, don't limit yourself to one topic (froma guitar players point of view; expand on a riff and sound it out in words) ... Ex: Think of something like "life".
I woke up this morning thinking of my life
It's been hard out here and Ooohh the strife
I've seen things happen thats made me turn away
Maybe tomorrow will be better, instead of cold and grey.... etc.

Writing has to come from within to express outward to those who are around...
