Singing along with the guitar?

argh someone help me. i'm having problems singing while playing the guitar, because the rhythm of the song, and the strumming rhythm of the guitar are totally different. when i try to concentrate on the singing, my strumming becomes screwed, and vice versa. does it mean that im just not born to sing while playing, or is there some technique you use when you play and sing at the same time?

You have to practice the song without singing first until you know it automatically, and don't have to think about it. Then play it slowly while you sing the words. You'll have to practice it for awhile (and make sure nobody's home to hear you, because they'll likely kill you if you make them listen to you for a couple hours), but you'll eventually get it. Gradually speed the beat up. After the first hard one, it gets easier, so don't worry too much.

I have the same problem. My kids would say, "Dad, play. Don't sing."

yeah its just a coordination thing to learn. just play the song to the point where you dont have to think about it all and can do it with your eyes closed. then start the singing along to it. this has happened to me too and probably happens to everybody. good luck.

I had the same problem for the longest time. Honestly, what helped me was to learn a medium to hard song on the guitar PERFECTLY. Then try singing along with it. Once you get the guitar part down so well that you don't even have to think about it, the singing just comes naturally. That's what helped me. Also, the more songs that I did that with, the easier it got for me to pick up other songs. Good luck!

practice, practice, practice. You'll eventually get it down. Once you're capable do playing guitar and singing comfortably, then it's time to try drumming and singing - holy cow, I don't see how singing drummers do it.

I have the same problem, and I've found that really the only way to learn, is by practicing the guitar part so much that you can play it without even thinking about it and then try to add the singing.
