Do you think Josh Grobin goes overboard with his use of vibrato?

I think he sounds melodramatic and this is why I don't care for his music, which my wife loves and so she tells me I hurt her feelings when I criticize it. Regardless, what do you think?

Ugh, God yes. Him and Sarah Brightman. But his voice is much less obnoxious; it actually does have some richness to it.

I don't know about going overboard with the vibrato, but his voice does sound kind of nasally, but he still has a beautiful voice, never the less.

Well, no, I don't think so..... and don't forget (if you know this already) that you really have no conscious control over your vibrato as if it were a thing unto itself; it is always interconnected with the rest of your technique, it is a result of a well-developed technique. (I have heard pop singers try to fake it, always with the most unattractive results, however)

Sometimes, like all singers, Groban does not have perfect control over his voice which I suggest is the reason you find his voice melodramatic .......but I hardly find his vibrato alarming; it does not signal any serious vocal problems and it depends upon his performance::.singers change from day to day.....they are their own instruments and they reflect what is going on with themselves, as for example, an oboe does not ........I heard him the other day on Oprah, and there was not a hair out of place, vocally, and really: beautiful, beautiful, heartfelt singing...........singing should not be about technique, it is about communication.....sometimes people are embarrassed when someone hangs his heart on his sleeve ...... personally I don't mind it at all, in fact I prefer it because I want to be sung to !! You don't want a robot to sing you a lullaby, isn't that so? .....but I do object if the singing is too gymnastic, if all the high-C's are heartlessly hurled against the back wall of the auditorium....that I don't buy.

In my opinion, Josh Groban has a very nice voice, very natural, very warm & communicative, very masculine ~ sort of like the boy-next-door if they boy next door could sing .... I am grateful for the freshness and lack of complexity of the sound, if you know what I mean: I do not burst into tears they way I do when I listen to Boccelli whose voice sounds so sad that it makes me cry

So, don't criticise Groban if it hurts your wife's feelings ....as the saying goes: every kindergartener has a right to her own opinions, and you have to live with her, she doesn't pick at your golf game (does she?), and in any case.... it's almost Christmas !!!
