Why are talk shows called "talk shows"?

All i see going on is arguing and yelling.

your not watching the right ones like oprah or doc phil your watching maury povich and jerry springer.your watching the yelling shows not the talk shows try watching ellen or someone interesting.you must like the drama of course you do abveously your watching.

because they have a specific topic that everyone is suppose to "talk" about. not every show was about yelling when talk shows started!

Well, it depends on which ones you watch. Meet the Press, This Week, Oprah--these are all called talk shows and there isn't any arguing and yelling.

Because they consist mostly of talking as opposed to music. Talking is talking, regardless of volume.

Because it is not scripted (generally) and the forum is talking. Talking to people about people, about issues etc... even if it often ends in fighting, yelling and/or crying

they are still talking to each other even if they are fighting!

Because it's all talk, whether they're yelling or not it's not neccessarily a plotted out drama. And they have guest speakers who talk..

normally that's what they do sit and talk, now are you watching oprah and ellen or are you watching jerry springer or steve? because jerry and steve aren't talk shows

before springer they would sit down and talk about moral issues and stuff you would see on after school specials. after jerry now it's all about the ratings and the easiest way to get ratings is the "my daddy is also my cousin and we both love the same person" type of topic

You may have something there. Perhaps they should be known as, " Moaning Shows ", or, better still , " The Moaning and Screaming Shows "

Talk Shows are listed as such because they discuss issues in a panel or one on one setting.

Not sure who coined the Phrase 'Talk Show', however, I do believe Phil Donahue was listed as a Talk Show and was the precursor to the Talk Show formats of today.
